Are You Getting Personal?

Date April 27, 2009

So, you feeling a little busy lately? You feel like there is so much stuff going on in your life right now, that you aren’t making enough time for God? Or you feel like the other stuff is taking you away from church, so you feel disconnected? Well, if you didn’t know already church is only one way to get connected to God. There are many ways to connect, but what I want you to understand is that keeping the connection with God strong, has to do a lot with your “Personal Time”. I’m talking about one-on-one time, just you and the big guy, God.

In my experience, I went to all the church activities and i felt pretty connected with God! There was always something missing though, I wasn’t going any further in my relationship, I was stuck. Yes I had God in my life, I went to church, praised him, all that good stuff, I was a part of everything. Still, I felt like I was going in circles. I realized that I wasn’t going to go any further in my walk with Christ if I didn’t take time out of my day to thank Him, to ask for forgiveness, to surrender myself to Him. Don’t use missing church as an excuse for feeling distant from God. Yes, youth group, events, conferences can help, but to deepen your relationship you are going to need that personal time with God.

So, go in your back yard, look at the stars, trees, birds, insects, flowers…talk to God, thank him for creating a beautiful place to live in. Or sit in your room, play worship music - bump it up, sing your heart out! God wants you to talk to him, he wants you to take time out of your day to have a chat! I cannot express the joy, the love, and the peace God has given me through my spending time with him.

So I challenge you to just stop what you’re doing and pray, read, sing, take a little walk and talk to God. He is your best friend and he loves you with a Love that is so amazing! You have a great opportunity to have an amazing relationship that will never fail you, so take it! Adam, Alie, and I will continue to pray for you all, so that you may deepen your relationship with God! Get excited and get personal with Him, you won’t regret it, I promise!!

That is so true! I do feel disconnected when I am not at something. I am trying to make God a bigger part of my life by setting aside time to read my Bible and to talk to him, but with everything going on I still feel stuck. I think I just have to say that every night, no matter what I am doing, from 9-9:30 I will praise God by reading my Bible, worshiping or praying to Him. Thank you Arty for such a great blog!

I don’t think that was the point of Arty’s message. Being close to God isn’t this complicated, mysterious, cryptic thing that we have to figure out someday far off in the future. It’s just about spending time making God your focus.

If you wanted to get closer to that special someone (cute guy, cute girl), you would try to find ways to hang out with them, figure out what’s important to them. That’s how it is with God. We just need to SHOW UP. Not show up to church, necessarily, but show up with God. Just say, “Hey God, these next 20-30 minutes of my life, it’s just me and you.” And then do what you do, if you wanna listen to music, do it. If you wanna learn what kind of stuff God cares about, read your Bible. If you wanna enjoy God’s beauty and majesty, take a walk. If you wanna wonder about God’s greatness and power, sit and be silent. If you wanna enjoy God’s blessing, do something you love (God gave you those abilities) - draw, sing, swim, run, write, play your musical instrument. Whatever you do, do it to the glory of God. I think that’s what Arty’s talking about with getting personal. What do you think?

i agree one hundred percent personally i like listening to music such as A Current Affair, Unhindered, MercyMe, Switchfoot and Underoath. but when i have a problem this part amazes me all the time i open up the bible to a random page and the answer is right before me i just flip through the pages and something in side of me tells me to stop and i read the page and my problem is usually somewhere in the passage. so that’s a way me and God have some one on one time. but sometimes i just get gods words inside me it’s hard to explain but it’s like lyrics to a song but the words go through my head constantly any body else think god talks to them in special or different ways?

I also agree a hundred percent. I like listening to music for my time with God, I guess I’m a music person. I’m having Sara text me every night at 9:25 (her phone is taken away at 9:30 so it has to be a little before then) to remind me to read my bible. For the next half hour or so, I sit in my room and have my time with God and my bible. This, of course, is accompanied by music. I think God talks to me through my time of just sitting and praising him, thinking about how wonderful he is and what he has done for all of us. I don’t know if this is a really special or different way, but does this answer your question Garrett?

Man it’s Amazing when you set that time aside for you and God to just Hang out , chill, talk , chat it up and just get real with him. He dosn’t Judge, he dosn’t intrupt when you’re talking and it’s just Awesome! I Personally haven’t felt this close to God in my whole life… I know I’ve only been alive 19 years but it’s just such a great feeling. Emma- Music is an amazing way to worship during God and Me time. The words to many songs just Jump out and say exactaly what you want God to know. But sorta about what Garrett was saying sometimes God tells you what to say like lyrics which is insanely cool, some nights I’m just so tired from a long day and I ask God to just tell me what to pray and somehow things I’ve never thought about or people i’ve forgotten about pop up in my head … ya you think thats just a quinkie dink… ya that’s not it’s Def, GOD! Setting that time for GOd and I to just chit chat has truly changed my every day life and It seems to be workin for you guys too! ILOVE you ALL so much and Tonight I’m praying for you ;) like always!

one time that i try to set aside for just God is right before i fall asleep…i listen to worship songs such as “father will you come” and “god of this city” because they remind me of times that i was close to God. this helps me clear my mind of anything that im stressing about or obsessing over and only think about God.
