Are you ready for the Life?

Date September 15, 2009

Our high school youth group here at Hope is called “the Life.”  Recently we’ve been talking about what it means to live lives of faith with Christ at the center.  We’ve talked about what it means to be a community of faith where we look out for one another, support each other and share our lives with one another.

In youth group this  past Sunday night we talked about a story from Luke 5:1-11.  In this story we encounter several different postures of people.

For some of the people in the story, faith and a relationship with Christ is a POSSIBILITY.  They’re following Jesus and listening to his stories and teachings.  They may not agree with everything he has to say, but at least they’re listening.

In the story, Peter’s faith becomes something that is PERSONAL.  Jesus steps into Peter’s boat, he comes into Peter’s life in a real and tangible way, and Peter lets him in.

When Jesus is through with his teaching, he asks Peter to push out into deep waters and let down his nets.  At this point Peter demonstrates that his relationship with Christ and trust in this carpenter from Galilee is a PRIORITY in his life.  Though they haven’t done well with fishing up to that point, Peter risks the embarassment and throws out his nets.

The blessing that Peter receives following this small act of obedience is overwhelming.  At this moment, Peter decides to make his faith PUBLIC and begins to follow Jesus as he heads out to continue his ministry.

In youth group we talked about these different stages of faith and which category we find ourselves in.  Our youth staff would like to challenge and invite members of our high school group, who are ready to take another step in their faith, to consider applying to be a part of our youth leadership team.

You can learn more about this commitment by downloading the application.  We’re excited about what God is doing in the lives of our young people.  Please continue to lift them up in prayer.

Very truly,

Adam Knudson
