Youth Group and “14 Things Jesus didn’t Say”

Date October 5, 2009

Our high school youth group has really been the place to be on Sunday nights, so if you’re in high school - you should definitely plan to join us.  This past week we discussed the teachings of Jesus, in a different sort of way.  Encouraging us to reach out, expand our minds and think of the mission and ministry that God has planned for us, we discussed “14 Things that Jesus Did Not Say…“  I didn’t come up with these on my own, but I borrowed them from Perry Noble and his BLOG on Leadership, Vision and Creativity.

A lot of the time we want to put words into Jesus’ mouth.  We want him to fit into our standards of what we consider to be right and wrong and we want his teachings to agree with us.  In the United States, it’s been convenient to be a Christian for many generations.  The problem is, being a Christian was never meant to be a “convenient” lifestyle.  Following Christ is supposed to require self-sacrifice, humility and risk.  As we pursue a life, lived in obedience to Christ, we must be prepared to set ourselves aside.  It’s not about us, it’s about God.

Are there some of these statements that you wish Jesus HAD said?  What do you think about these statements?  Be bold and share your reactions.

the statement about how “we CAN live our lives without jesus” and “we dont need him” really struck me because about the middle of my sophomore year i was having trouble with this. i really lost sight of God in my life was trying to handle everything myself. i like to think of myself as a tough person who can handle things but in this instance i finally learned how to ask for help. seeing this statement and knowing that the complete opposite was true really reinforced the lesson that it took me so long to learn.
